Forms of gathering at the (building) edge
#From service to public space
Francistown, Botswana

Passer-by sales maker
Nicknamed Bulawayo street, the secondary street in Francistown has become a heavy resource centre for Zimbabweans who come to Botswana to buy household goods and clothing from their home country. Locals have decided to take ownership of the streets infront of the Chinese stores, to provide similarly a wide variety of products at similar prices, while taking advantage of the prime location transforming the building edge into a seating area and public space.

Boxville
The Boxville effort began in 2014 with a single shipping container — the Bronzeville Bike Box. The Bike Box offers neighbors and commuters with bike sales and repair services, meeting their needs for transportation and community. With increased support from 2017 it quickly became a thriving weekly market, doubling its footprint again in 2018 with the addition of Neighborhood Square, which provides space for the community to gather as well as a venue for cultural celebrations and programming.
