Many small streets in Stone Town are characterised by an enlarged step with proportions similar to the height of a chair. This defines the entrance to the door. The step acts as a table for products and the street becomes an open store environment where people gather to buy items and often encounter social meets, building and exchanging social values.

Nicknamed Bulawayo street, the secondary street in Francistown has become a heavy resource centre for Zimbabweans who come to Botswana to buy household goods and clothing from their home country. Locals have decided to take ownership of the streets infront of the Chinese stores, to provide similarly a wide variety of products at similar prices, while taking advantage of the prime location transforming the building edge into a seating area and public space.

	Boxville

The Boxville effort began in 2014 with a single shipping container — the Bronzeville Bike Box. The Bike Box offers neighbors and commuters with bike sales and repair services, meeting their needs for transportation and community. With increased support from 2017 it quickly became a thriving weekly market, doubling its footprint again in 2018 with the addition of Neighborhood Square, which provides space for the community to gather as well as a venue for cultural celebrations and programming.

RDP housing observation

The Reconstruction and development programme (RDP) housing sits within a public housing program run by the government which assigns free housing to those who are unable to afford housing. This programme was initiated in 1994 to tackle social problems across South Africa however lacks any community programmed spaces. As a result, residents (especially youth) hangout at the walls as a gathering site.

Main-road food vendors

Whether it be during a lunch break, between errands or at a traffic light, street vendors have access to customers, while the pedestrians and drivers have the convenience of shopping for food on their way; as a result of street vendors recognising a gap in the market particularly in the city, where the farmers typically would not have enough space to occupy. The street vendors buy from local farmers, and sell to the public with a mark-up small enough to remain more attractive than the grocery stores.

Starting with a single employee from his trunk at the 63rd street beach, a local entrepreneur has had locations under a tent on Adams and Pulaski, moved underground to an indoor space in my beauty shop on Wilcox and Pulaski, a converted, a less and that ideal situation on Cicero and Ohio, and a converted mechanic shop on Jackson and Pulaski to provide food in to the Westside and Southside communities. Jerk Taco Man is now on the Southside again on 77th in a converted mechanic shop that provides foods to nearby Southside neighborhoods and those that pass through exiting off of the Dan Ryan Expressway.

63rd Street Beach, Chicago, US.

63rd Street beach - Musicians and Drummers have been creating community at the 63rd Street beach for more than 40 years. The drummers and performers meet weekly, and especially brings together community from the South Shore, Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods. The Musicians and drummers congregate at a slice of unused concrete that leads to the opening of the 63rd Street Beach House. Without the spontaneity of suddenly being greeted by the sounds of music and drumming, the stretch of space surrounding the 63rd street would be silent and often barron.

	Braids in Jozi

Many women come to the city to braid their hair and due to a lack of financial access to rental economic space, braiding happens in the street. This braiding creates a service in the street, with the simple addition of plastic chairs and signs on the pavement. Braiding often takes time leaving customers with not much to do but to watch their surrounds. This subconsciously creates a people-watching environment-watching-learning experience, providing customers (mostly Black women) with layered social cartographic knowledge through witnessing negotiations often overlooked by formal mapping mechanisms.

	Braiding as empowerment
The advancement of social media has given unprecedented access to a completely organic flow of artistic creativity in the hair braiding industry…The motivation feed of @hairbyangeled represents everything food about Chicago braiding culture…The @Crowezilla feed features show stopping artistic braid creations tempered by a pleasantly familiar South Side authenticity’ (Queen’s Corner Blog) for example. Braiding has emerged from its home based out-of-need intervention, into many Black women starting and running empowering businesses about hair.

	Spaza Shop

The spaza shop is an informal typology characterised by the informal use of typically self-built or self-appropriated structures to fit the purposes of selling everyday grocery items. The spaza shop tends to be open 24 hours of the day or for most of the hours of the day also becomes a source of light and a space of social occupation at night, consequently becoming a space of safety where dark and empty areas pose danger.

Roseland/Michigan TIF district

‘The Roseland/Michigan TIF district encompasses 176 acres of commercial, residential and institutional properties along Michigan Avenue in the Roseland and West Pullman communities. Once part of thriving mixed-use neighborhoods, area properties suffer from various states of obsolescence and deterioration, though many possess significant architectural features that contribute to the area's character. The purpose of the district is to encourage a broad range of improvements to existing commercial and residential properties and to foster new construction where appropriate.’

	Stoeps of the Bo-Kaap

The stoeps of the Bo-Kaap define the edge of row houses. Some stoeps are more open and exposed allowing people in the public to sit on public porches. These are often the types of stoeps at the edge of small shops. Residential buildings have side stoep entrances with stairs and low balcony walls, allowing people in the community and residents to sit on the stairs for a rest, and to enjoy outdoor space with a sense of community belonging on the residential territorial footprint of the building. This creates a sense of user-based ownership for the stoep-sitter and a community surveillance onto the street.

As an intersectional collective, Matri-Archi(tecture) uses research and spatial education rooted in the African continent to design spaces and evoke architectural discourses that reflect and archive overlooked cultures. Matri-Archi believes that such cultures can inform spatial environments through everyday practices of routine, occupation, gathering, and negotiation. Reflecting our (Global) South Side offers a space to house everyday interactions and to explore how occupation and reflection can facilitate learning about other cultures.
